My 4th of July started at about 4:30 am for a race start at 7:00. I wanted to get there early to snag a good parking spot and allow plenty of time to get our numbers. This race started and ended in Monument Valley Park. Unlike most races, it traveled south of downtown towards Fountain then doubled back. This was my first time running the Ascent and it has taken a few days to digest exactly what happened up there. Michelle reminded me this week of a conversation we had about the Ascent a couple of years ago when we first started running. We were on the Fountain Creek trail struggling through a couple of miles when I looked up at Pikes Peak and said I always wanted to do the race. She told me I was crazy. It was two years ago that I finally decided to quit smoking and start running again. I had showed up for a couple of Jack Quinn's runs and a friend of mine tried to convinced me to do the Hellacious Trail Challenge. He even paid my entry fee and I grudgingly agreed.
